Sugar Gliders - Day Two

In This Episode...

Morph meets Panama

Panama woke me up from a snooze at 8:30 this evening as if he had heard Dawn tell me that this was the time she always fed the gliders. I put on a fresh pot of coffee (because the gliders aren't the only nocturnal critters around here) and went to see what goodies were in the fridge.

Yesterday there was an a wide variety of fruit so I naturally assumed that there would be today also. It never dawned on me that Ken would have taken them to Florida with him when he left this morning. (Of course, he knows that I consider fruit a garnish but how could he forget that we had new fruit eating family members?!)

I did have a chicken I'd been planning to cook while he was gone but it would take a while to cook that.

Did you know that if you nuke chicken livers they explode? Neither did I. (I digress but if it will keep you from ever having to clean up the same mess as I did tonight, it's well worth the digression.)

If chicken livers explode after you find that your husband has absconded with the fruit, it is of course, his fault. After cursing him for a while and cleaning up the mess I proceeded with my scavenging and found an apple that he had overlooked, part of a tomato, some pumpkin seeds (which had made a big hit with the critters last night), raisins, and some leftover salad that seemed it would suffice for glider-supper.

They grabbed a few bits of food and dashed back into the house with them and nibbled for a while. Then it was quiet again.

The little house was still in the bottom of the cage from last night (it really belongs on a balcony up above) and it had some leftover food in it so I thought the responsible thing to do would be to clean it. (Ok, I'm lying. I wanted to get the gliders out where I could see them but that seemed like a reasonable excuse since sanitation is of the utmost importance.)  I put a towel in the cage so that they would have a hiding place, and cleaned the house. When it was back up top where it belonged, I slowly removed the towel.

They didn't seem at all  upset to be suddenly exposed and they both headed toward the food dishes. (One being the supper dish and the other a dish of seeds that Dawn always left available to them.)

After some nibbling and wandering around Glyph (the female) noticed the millet spray I'd hung in the cage and was up there in a flash for dessert. (Ken eats millet too. In fact his diet is remarkably similar to that prescribed for the gliders. Luckily for the gliders - and Fenton - Ken's millet does not come on a stick or that would probably be in Florida too.)

After a few minutes she was safely hiding back in the house.

Meanwhile back on the ground Morph was checking out the scene and at last deigned to give Panama the time of day. Panama has been absolutely beside himself at the fact that there are wires separating him from his new pets and keeping him from playing with them. He and Fenton did take turns for a while tonight chasing each other around my desk but Panama kept stopping at the glider side of the desk and hopping up on the chair to see if they were ready to come out and play yet.

(I haven't managed to get a picture of Fenton chasing Panama yet but I'll keep trying. It is hilarious!)

Morph showed Panama his cool hamster wheel and then gave him a kiss on the nose. Panama was so elated he didn't even whine when Morph joined Glyph a short time later up at the house.

All of that was a few hours ago and it's been quiet since. I can see glyph peeking out of the house but I've been trying to get some work done and have left everyone alone. I'll probably try to entice them out of the house in a while...I have cooked the chicken. ;)
