A Better Way to Insert Images

There are two different methods that can be used to insert images in order to eliminate the problem discussed on the "It works in "Preview in Browser" but not on the web" page. The first one is the one you need to use for background images, and you can use it for images in general, if you only have a few.

Before working on placing your images either on your pages, or for use as backgrounds, open up Windows Explorer to the directory where the images are. Also open up FrontPage Explorer, in Folder Mode. Drag and drop the image files that you will be using, from Windows Explorer to the right  side of  FrontPage Explorer

Once you have done this you will proceed to insert your images as usual, however when you click on "Insert", "Image" you will choose the files from the large window that shows the files in this web, instead of choosing them using the "select a file on your computer" icon.  This will eliminate the problem with the code.

The second method, is especially useful if you are using many images, as it will save you a lot of time.

For this method you need a graphics program that you can open your images in. I use PaintShopPro from www.jasc.com (and highly recommend it). This program lets me look at thumbnail versions of all the images in a directory so that I can choose the one I want without knowing the filename. Whatever program you use, you must be able to copy an image to the clipboard with it.

With both the graphics program and FrontPage Editor open, copy the image from the graphics program to your clipboard. Click your mouse on the spot where you want the image to appear on the FrontPage page and then click Edit Paste (or right click the mouse and choose paste). The image is now on your page.

When you save the page, FrontPage will show the usual screen (in FrontPage 98) that lists the images being saved to the page. You will notice that when you insert the images this way, they will not have your original file names but will have a name similar to the name of the page they will show on. You can change them on this screen, if you wish to, by clicking on the "rename" button. However, I find that the way the files are renamed makes it easier to see what pages they belong with. For example, my "winzip.htm" page has 10 associated image files. FrontPage named them "winzip1.jpg" through "winzip10.jpg". If I should decide to move this page to some other directory or to delete it entirely, it will be easy for me to see what image files are associated with it, by the way they are named.
